Three separate deaths have been linked to key-less ignition. Keyless ignition is a relatively new car technology made for its convenience. According to reports the three deaths 1 in New York and 2 in Florida are said to be caused by Carbon Monoxide poisoning by inadvertent keyless engine ignitions. All three cases the people have died in their sleep from CO poisoning by leaving their engines running in their attached garage. One victim who survived the poisoning his filing a law suit against Toyota. Rivera a former college professor has had brain damage after her Lexus in 2008 was unintentionally started. Her lawyer said that the car was left running even though her keyless fob was separated from the car. "The engine should shut off after a specific period of time," Kushlefsky said. "It's a problem that's only going to be magnified as more cars end up on the road with keyless start".
I think that this has to be fixed before more keyless cars start coming, because then more and more people will start to die by this poisoning. My solution to this problem would be after the driver leaves the car for more than 5 minutes or so to automatically turn off the car to eliminate this problem, also to make it so that the key is not detected from less amount of distance, so that if the person has the key in his room it is not detected by the car in the garage.
I agree strongly with Aman's point of view that Toyota and other automakers need to do something about this. The engineers that came up with the keyless start system obviously did not take the time to add certain safety features that should be included, like shutoff after a certain amount of time or shutoff after the keyfob is removed from the vicinity of the car. The automakers responsible for these deaths now have a negative image in many people's minds after hearing about the deaths. They need to do something about it fast, or else their image might be tarnished beyond repair.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Aman they have to do something to fix this problem, key less start cars are going to be used alot in the future so we have to find a way to make them safe. I also think this could be easily avoided if people just payed attention to what they are doing with their car. You shouldn't have to count on your car to turn itself off, and you can just have the car turn off after 5 minutes because what if people want to warm up their car before they get into it, you can't warm up your car that quickly. People just need to take responsibility for their actions and pay attention to what their doing with their car.
ReplyDeleteThank you John and Brett, for your great opinions.
