Pirates hijack Danish family’s sailboat

The Somalian Pirates have struck again. Only two days after the Somalian Pirates had captured two Americans for the first time, now they have captured a Danish family. Most hostages the pirates have captured are professional sailors, not families. Pirates are not known to have captured children. On board was a Danish couple and three children from ages 12-16 and two adult crew members. The Danish Foreign Ministry said the ship sent a distress signal on Thursday. The boat was believed to be heading towards Somalia. Earlier Monday, the Somalian pirates hijacked another ship hijacking a Greek-owned cargo vessel with 23 crew on board.

I think that someone such as the US military or the Danish military have to start taking action in stopping these Somalian pirates, because they are really starting to take way to many lives. I think the Somalian Pirates are asking for someone to come and get them because they usually never hijack boats with kids on them. This really caught the public on surprise. Another thing is that people really need to be careful of were they go they shouldn't travel by boat in the Indian Ocean, they should try to avoid it as much as possible as there is a very big risk of travelling there.

Student wrongfully arrested at Brampton school

A Brampton mother wants the Peel District School Board to review its relationship with police after her 14 year old son was wrongfully arrested at his school. Carshel Knowles spent the night on a concrete bench in a holding cell before they admitted it was based on inaccurate information and dropped the charges. Knowles said he was in first period drama class when his principal called him out to the hall. Carshel didn't even know what was happening when he got out of the class two police offers put him in handcuffs and said he is under arrest. It wasn't until when he talked to his mom later that he found out why he had been arrested. They had arrested him because there was a robbery at a store across the school involving a gun. In the surveillance camera they had thought they had seen someone that looked like him but then found out that they could not clearly see the face. Carshel's mom was really mad about this that she changed Carshel's school. "They didn't have to arrest him at school" Thomas said.

I think that this situation was not handled correctly by the police or the school, because first of all the police did not have clear evidence that Carshel was the one who had committed the robbery. Also they should not have arrested him in school in front of his friends when they did not even know that he had done this action for sure. I think, that something like this can cause kids to not even go to school, because they think that something like this would happen to them, when they didn't even do anything in the first place.

Americans killed by pirates were living their dreams, friends say

Four Americans, who were retired and sailing around the world were killed by Somali Pirates Tuesday. The Four Americans were taken hostage by Somali pirates of East Africa, were shot and killed. This is the first time Americans had been killed by the pirate attacks in the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean. Two days before this attack, a New York court had sentenced a pirate to 33 years in prison for the 2009 hijacking of the Maersk Alabama, a U.S. cargo vessel. A pirate in Somalia told the AP last week that because of that verdict the pirates were more likely to attack Americans. The pirates currently hold 30 ships and more than 660 hostages. They typically get a multi-million dollar ransom for releasing their captives.

I think that the Somalian's are really getting there self into very big trouble by killing Americans. When they kill Americans they have to know that then they get the military involved which is not going to look to good for the Somalians. I also hope that they do get taken down because they have been doing this for many years and it is getting out of hand.

Disputed $50M lottery prize resolved by OLG

The Ontario Lottery Corporation has found a resolution to the disputed $50 million Lotto max jackpot from the Dec. 31 draw. Two groups who have claimed the prize from Bell Canada Scarborough have agreed to split it between all 30 of them. Only the original 19 will get their money today, while the other 11 will have to go to court to get their share of the $18 million left to claim. OLG said it will be up to the court to decide how much the additional claimants will be paid. The leader of the group of 19 Bell employees validated the one winning ticket on Jan. 3 after buying it in Scarborough. The OLG investigation concluded that 19 individuals were participants in the group and were entitled to some of the $50 million prize. This is the first time the jackpot has been won by a single ticket.

I think that OLG should have solved this a while ago. I do not know why it had taken them so long to come up with a decision to split it evenly. I think that this was the right idea to split it evenly it just shouldn't have taken them this long to do it. A

Salon worker fired over headscarf, she says

A young Markham woman who works as an esthetician claims she was fired for wearing an Islamic headscarf because the salon "promotes hair". Mehwish Ali, a 22 year-old was fired Tuesday, a day after she says the co-owner told her the hijab was unacceptable. "I was devastated when I heard that," Ali told the Star. " I have worn the hijab for more than 10 years and never felt any kind of discrimination." The co-owner of the franchise denies this and says, "This is a performance issue, strictly a performance issue." Ali disagrees with this and has turned to the Human Rights Legal Support Centre for help. On Monday the co-owner came to her and said, "We don't promote scarves here, we promote hair." She said,"Before you start work today, get rid of that thing off your head." Ali she she was upset and decided to go home.
I think that this is really racist and it is not right to tell someone to take off their scarf when this is part of their religion. Although maybe he didn't fire her because of the scarf he sure did make it look like that was the reason. I think if it was about her performance he should have talked to her about it and maybe given her a week to get her performance up. This is also bad because it can cause young Muslims to think again about wearing scarf and go against their religion.

Safety of keyless ignition systems questioned after deaths

Three separate deaths have been linked to key-less ignition. Keyless ignition is a relatively new car technology made for its convenience. According to reports the three deaths 1 in New York and 2 in Florida are said to be caused by Carbon Monoxide poisoning by inadvertent keyless engine ignitions. All three cases the people have died in their sleep from CO poisoning by leaving their engines running in their attached garage. One victim who survived the poisoning his filing a law suit against Toyota. Rivera a former college professor has had brain damage after her Lexus in 2008 was unintentionally started. Her lawyer said that the car was left running even though her keyless fob was separated from the car. "The engine should shut off after a specific period of time," Kushlefsky said. "It's a problem that's only going to be magnified as more cars end up on the road with keyless start".

I think that this has to be fixed before more keyless cars start coming, because then more and more people will start to die by this poisoning. My solution to this problem would be after the driver leaves the car for more than 5 minutes or so to automatically turn off the car to eliminate this problem, also to make it so that the key is not detected from less amount of distance, so that if the person has the key in his room it is not detected by the car in the garage.

Man in disguise says he was coached by smugglers

A young Asylum seeker who snuck into Canada disguised as an old man told an Immigration and Refugee Board hearing Thursday he was coached to lie by smugglers in China. He is being held in custody because he is a liar and a possible flight risk. The man boarded an Air Canada flight from Hong Kong last October wearing the elaborate mask, then removed it during the flight, prompting a warning from the Canada Border Services Agency. The claimant's lawyer said the only reason his client remains in detention is because the government wants to make an example of the man. The man admitted he lied to the Canada Border Service agency. He said, "The snakeheads told me I had only elementary school." His lawyer said, "He is afraid of the snakeheads, he did that, he did what he was told."

I think that this is a very important situation because people can disguise them self and go on a plane and possibly be a big risk to the plane. The government needs to get security to work harder so that they do not have to deal with these type of risks.
